京都市美術館は、昭和８（1933）年１１月、天皇即位の大礼を記念して建てられた日本で２番目の大規模公立美術館です。明治以降の京都を中心とした日本画、洋画、彫刻、工芸、書、版画など約２３００点を収蔵しています。海外展や公募展、コレクション展等の展覧会を多数開催しているほか、美術・工芸に関する調査研究、近・現代美術の収集、作家活動の助成など、現代の美術・文化の振興に貢献しています。

Kyoto City Museum

Built in November 1933 (Showa 8), in commemoration of the Emperor’s enthronement, Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art is the second large-scale art museum in Japan. The collection from the Meiji era or later, mostly created in Kyoto numbers about 2,300 articles: Japanese and Western paintings, sculptures, craft works, calligraphic works, block prints and others. The art museum not only holds a large number of such exhibitions as overseas, publicly sponsored or collection ones, but also performs research study of arts and crafts, collects modern and current works, and aids artists; it contributes to the advancement of contemporary art and culture.
